Driver CPC qualifications are for Large Goods Vehicles (LGV) and Passenger Carrying Vehicles (PCV) drivers who drive in the UK. It evolved from an EU Directive whose objective is to improve the knowledge and skills of professional drivers.
The legislation is split into two parts:
New LGV and PCV drivers must obtain the initial qualification alongside their vocational licence which enables them to use their licence professionally.
Existing LGV and PCV drivers must undertake periodic training, which involves undertaking 35 hours of training every 5 years.

All drivers will need their Certificate of Professional Competence to drive as a career. From September 2008 this affected Bus and Coach drivers and it affected lorry drivers from September 2009. Drivers who passed their test before these dates will have “grandfather” rights but from that date needed to start working towards their CPC (see below). In essence this equates to one days training each year over five years to cover the CPC requirements and then starting again to work towards the next certificate due five years later.
